The morning of June 21st our friend and neighbor Candice faced the court for her eviction trial. Behind her were dozens of community members once again packing the court and wearing red in solidarity with Candice’s struggle.
The people watched as Candice bravely defended herself in court, stating clearly that she was not backing down and will fight however necessary for her childrens’ home. Ultimately, the court ruled to evict Candice King and her family.
To be clear Candice won in eviction court the only way you can as a working class person, the judge in her closing statement admitting that Candice’s complaints are important and meaningful, however the law upholds a landlord’s right to do the absolute bare minimum for their tenants regardless of the insufficient care it provides the members of the household.
We must always remember that the courts and laws are made and enforced to protect landlords and capitalists and NOT working class people! Now is the time to mobilize to support Candice on the ground, her family can be evicted at any point and we the community need to show up— the collective is our greatest weapon.
